The Fall – Just Waiting (1992)
As well as producing scorching rock’n'roll, The Fall have always had a melancholic side (“Bill is Dead” anyone). This typically inaccurate cover version of Hank Williams’ “Just Waiting” has a yearning, reflective quality that I never tire of and can be found on the generally wonderful Code:Selfish album. Fans of Bono bashing will also like the line about “The cretin is waiting for U2 to come on MTV again …”. Not from Hank’s original I suspect.
