Tom Clay – What The World Needs Now (Abraham, Martin and John) (1971)
Classic one hit wonder from the early 1970s released on an offshoot of Motown records. Sold a million in the US of Stateside.
This was my favourite song when I was about 8 or 9 and always sounded good on my not overly cool Donald Duck radio. Played all the time on commercial radio in Hong Kong.
For the statisticians amongst you, this is now the third post with a JFK connection ….
Also, 1971 comes up trumps again and I haven’t even started on Slade, Bowie, etc.
This record is a bit sugary in places but one of the earliest examples of a bit of sampling … that is, radio recordings of various assassinations and political speeches played over Burt Bacharach’s classic song from 1965.
Nice video at this link – won’t play directly, just click through to the Youtube link.
