Johnny Cash – One (2000)

This is one of my all time favourite songs and yet another wonderful cover version. I’d been holding this back but it is on the same album as Johnny Cash’s version of “Wayfaring Stranger” (which is all the rage with the young people of today, so I’m told) therefore has much relevance.

The U2 original is pretty good and Bono clearly needed to exist in order for the song to be written (allegedly it is meant to be some ham fisted metaphor about the relationship between eastern and western Europe).

Johnny Cash plays it straight down the line. One man, a guitar and his soul – with the authority to demand to be listened to.

A stupendous record.
