The Bevis Frond – Let Them Beautify You (2000)

As a staunch Republican, today’s nonsense was only ever going to pass me by.

However, having “inadvertently” watched 6 hours of coverage, I emerged more ambivalent and compromised than I expected. Objectively, the spectacle was immense; the brother/sister hood was total, the goodwill overwhelming, the voice of the people, unanimous and  generous. Having attended an increasingly frequent number of funerals over the years , the power of a church service has always turned out to be something to reckon with – if only for the solidarity it generates.

Also, you hear words not usually used in everyday life, the pub or, even, err, Waitrose. “Beautify” was one such word and I immediately thought of this track. On one level, a standard, vaguely alternative guitar fest but, actually, a song I have always found moved me more than it ever should have done. Hence, the circle is complete.
