Billy Bragg – Tank Park Salute (1991)
This is a pretty difficult song to post.
In my view, this is just about the most moving, personal, heartfelt and relevant song ever written. Particularly for folk like me who are “getting on a bit” (aka, glorious middle age).
Heard this first on a “Live at the Mountain Stage” recording including R.E.M around 1991. Included “Wiggy” on piano …
Understated guitar, delicate piano, a meditation on paternal death. How can anyone write something so .. spot on.
Live version. I defy you not to like this!

Utter genius..your blog has prompted me to do do lot of YouTube searching over past week and came across this as well.
Not that it links at all but while I’m here can I suggest for future consideration:
Another brilliant song – will post it myself later!
a tear, and a visit to my sleeping boys to ruffle their hair (gentle of course, without waking them and up and scaring the shit out of them that some emotional monster has suddenly some to mess with them). hard to see how music can get better
