Nat King Cole – (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66 (1946)
I love the Stones version of this song (and Chuck Berry’s) and will post it in due course. But this is the original version – fantastic bass, guitar, piano and vocals with a timeless tune and lyric.
In my view, this is the second best ever song about a road – pipped only by Billy Bragg’s seminal updating of Route 66 to “A13 (Trunk Road to the Sea)” – that will also have to follow on this blog in the next few days …
I don’t know whether this dates right back to 1946 but this is an unbelievable performance; you just have to see this.
