Sebadoh – Soul And Fire (1993)
Sebadoh were quite simply one of the finest bands of the 1990s. Okay, they didn’t go out to court publicity and the production could be a bit dodgy. But, in those days, those were badges of honour. A restatement that old punk rock values still counted for something.
Founded by Dinosaur Jr. bass player Lou Barlow, Sebadoh were the kings of melodic, lo-fi, underground rock when they set their minds to the task.
To support this contention, I submit the wonderful “Soul and Fire” single from their “breakthrough” LP “Bubble and Scrape”.
Two versions. The LP original then a live cut from Koko in Camden in 2007 when they played the Bubble and Scrape LP track for track. A great gig that I managed to get to and where I was probably standing five people to the left of the person taking this dodgy video footage. Hang on, Steven Spielberg, didn’t you spill my pint ..?
