The Beat – Whine and Grine/Stand Down Margaret (1980)
The Beat are quite simply one of the greatest bands of all time. Known as “The English Beat” in the USA for some arcane copyright reasons.
They only released 3 LPs (“I Just Can’t Stop It”, “Wha’ppen?” and “Special Beat Service”) but each is a classic.
“Whine and Grine/Stand Down Margaret” comes from the debut LP of 1980 and shows the fellas were well ahead of the curve in getting their complaints in early. “Whine and Grine” was an old Prince Buster classic from the mid 1970s and The Beat build on this to create an all time classic of the punk/post punk era.
Three tracks for your consideration: the original LP version; the dub from the B-Side of “Best Friend” and then the Prince Buster original of “Whine and Grine”!
