David Bowie – Queen Bitch (1971)

Now, I will ultimately post many Bowie tracks on this site: Heroes, Rebel Rebel, China Girl, We Prick You, Five Years, Ziggy Stardust, etc, etc. However, it’s half time in a ludicrously poor performance by Manchester City at the sanctimonious Liverpool. So, I need to cheer myself up.

“Queen Bitch” is one of the great tracks off the sublime Hunky Dory LP. The bit where the electric guitar kicks in over the acoustic strumming remains one of the defining moments of the 20th century. Right alongside Mandela’s release from prison, Hitler’s suicide in his bunker, the 9/11 attacks, and the decision to wrongly send off Graham Baker for Manchester City against Leeds at home in the mid 1980s.

Pop perfection. Check the perfect lift from the original album then the live version from the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1972.

Surely Liverpool are only third in the sanctimonious stakes, after Barcelona and Arsenal?

And when did your 20th century end?

      Very wise words, Mr M.

Your first point is contentious, surely know one dines out on ancient history more than Liverpool? And, in general, I refer you to any interview ever by Mr Carragher,

By contrast, your second point is very amusing! I was, of course, referring to the “long” 20th century. As you know, I’m an analyst. Trust me this is a meaningful definition and not some frantic backpedaling having been rumbled.

Sorry, I shouldn’t have added more football chat to your fine blog, especially since I have officially given up football for the season after tonight. But, I refer you, in turn, to “The Arsenal”. I don’t know if there’s another phrase that sets my teeth so on edge.

    Anyway, back to the music…
