Artery – Into The Garden (1981)

Starting in late 1979, I started to buy large quantities of inevitably not very popular 7″ singles on needlessly obscure independent labels. I think the first was “Fiery Jack” by The Fall and then followed The Basement Five, Comsat Angels, Theatre of Hate, The Passions, The Ideal Husbands, Smack, The Lines, The Cravats (“Down the Precinct” anyone?), and dozens more.

What all of these records had in common is that I heard them on the late, great John Peel programme.

A classic of its type is “Into the Garden” by Artery. One of the neverending flow of bands coming out of Sheffield in this period, this is their, ahem, masterpiece. In at number 9 in the 1982 Festive 50.

Inevitably, this was actually the B-Side of the “Afterwards” single. The vinyl version and then the Peel Session!

Very Bauhaus. I’ve never heard of these guys. Good.
