The Smiths – Asleep (1985)

For a couple of blissful summers in the mid 1980s, me and my mum drove round a fair chunk of Lancashire visiting friends, relatives and various places. The soundtrack was always the first three Smiths LPs (“The Smiths”, “Hatful of Hollow” and “Meat is Murder).

This was always her choice. She loved “William, it was really nothing” (my dad’s name was Bill …) and “Please Please let Me Get What I Want”. She irretrievably fell out with some old friends while defending the honour of The Smiths and, in particular, “Suffer Little Children” which got some ludicrous publicity around 1984 which claimed that Morrissey was sympathising with the Moors Murderers.

She subsequently died of breast cancer in 1988 and this is the song I always remember her by.
