Joy Division – Passover (1980)

One of the half dozen greatest bands of all time.

On some days they are simply the best but then Talking Heads, The Ramones, The Smiths, New Order, The Beatles, The Stooges, James Brown, err, Crispy Ambulance, etc, will step up to make their own cases!

Many songs and LPs from the “post-punk” period have dated badly.

The same is not true of Joy Division’s second LP, “Closer”. An LP with no singles ….

I have previously posted here on “Decades” from the same LP, reflecting on the, ultimately, “humdrum”, motivation for such desperate and melancholic lyrics.

“Passover” falls into the same category for me. Don’t read this as the tortured anguish of a struggling artist; rather, sense the guilt of a young husband and father two-timing his wife, anticipating the consequences when she finds out and finding the excuses/reasons to explain himself ….

Or not.

This is a crisis I knew had to come

Destroying the balance I’d kept

Doubting, unsettling and turning around

Wondering what will come next

Is this the role that you wanted to live?

I was foolish to ask for so much

Without the protection and infancy’s guard

It all falls apart at first touch.

Just the track from the LP
