John Cooper Clarke – Thirty Six Hours (1980)

July 9, 2012 Leave a comment

John Cooper Clarke released some of the best records of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

His output being so much more than the lazy, “punk poet”, epithet might signal.

I’ve previously posted the epoch defining “Beasley Street” here and, until now, I’d struggled to decide which JCC missive to post next. Helpfully, the announcement today of the death of Ernest Borgnine at the age of 95 makes this a no-brainer.

Possibly the only track to ever give the great, late actor a namecheck, Mr Borgnine should be delighted at the quality of the verse in which tribute is bestowed.

Freezing in these paper jeans

Standing stiff in a dead man’s dream

Tobacco barons and the closet queen

Walk on the walls, wank in the beans

Shave, shit, a shower and a shoe shine

That’s it, sack time

Everybody looks like Ernest Borgnine

That’s it

And, to boot, one of the finest rock’n’roll records of all time!
