The Stranglers – Walk On By (1978)
The best version of the best song ever written by the incomparable Burt Bacharach and Hal David (whose death was announced today) …
As such, this qualifies as one of the greatest cover versions in musical history.
The first four Stranglers’ LPs were excellent – Rattus Norvegicus, No More Heroes, Black and White and The Raven. This track was released as a single in 1978 and was taken from the Black and White long player.
Guitar, bass, keyboard are simply superb on this and the extended instrumental section in the middle enables each instrument to take the lead in turn.
The original LP version then a live version and, finally, an appearance on Top of the Pops!
