The Sugarcubes – Birthday (1987)

I really love this record.

Possibly Bjork’s finest hour; though, to be fair, she has had so many.

This is the song to post to people on their birthday. Just trumping Altered Images and The Beatles for this honour. Admittedly, the lyrics make limited reference to parties, presents and blowing out candles on a cake …..

The English version (an indie hit no less!) and then the fantastic Icelandic original followed by a stunning live version from Reykjavik on 2006!

It’s still an extraordinary, haunting song. Remember hearing it for the first time on Peel and wondering what the hell could make a sound like that. Still sounds very fresh.
