Japandroids – The House That Heaven Built (2012)

Catching up on my backlog of CDs, MP3s, Spotify playlists, etc, and stumbled upon this slice of 2012 punk rock mayhem genius. Within 30 minutes, it has earned its place in the pantheon of bestmusicofalltime!

Japandroids are a Canadian two piece (guitar and drums) who sound like the natural heirs to the Husker Du mantle of melodic, fuzz drenched, indie rock. This track appears on their Celebration Rock LP released in the summer of 2012 and The House That Heaven Built was also released as a limited edition 7 inch single. Some similarities to The Hold Steady or The Gaslight Anthem at the very peak of their powers.

Full appreciation can be attained by turning up loud ….

The original studio version then as live cut.

Just seen this but it is a great choice, as it is one of the highlights of my album of 2012. If you get a chance to see them live they are exceptionally good – I’ve seen them twice, and both times they were the best live band I saw in the year in question.

Cool. Lead vocal delivery in the live version reminds me of Springsteen; the BVs on the live version like a strangled barking dog stuck in a small room.
